The sun had just started to descend toward the horizon when he rolled up one of the blankets from the bed and draped it over his shoulder. He had been thinking about Ket all day, wanting to know that the mer was safe, especially so close to the mainland and all of the whalling ships. He slipped out of the guest room and headed silently down the hall. He found a set of stairs and took them down, not sure if it was the same ones he had come up earlier in the day. This house was larger than his whole apartment building.

The manor was not entirely silent as he walked; he could hear people moving around and talking in various rooms, and there was the low, constant thrum of what was probably the desalination machines that produced the steam that would control most of the house’s functions and created fresh water. He turned several corners before finding himself in an unfamiliar hallway. He turned around, backtracking his path. He took the other hallway he had bypassed before, looking for anything familiar, and then nearly smacked into someone who was coming around the corner at the same time. “I’m sorry!” he gasped, reaching out his hand to steady the person.

It was a woman. She was not very tall, a few inches shorter than Eron, even in her heeled boots. Her white blouse and leather underbust corset were simple but exquisitely crafted from the finest material he had ever seen, her khaki breeches hugging her legs, with shiny, brown leather boots laced up with buttons to her knee. She had blond hair that was twisted into a simple chignon at the back of her head. She had on bright red lipstick that showed off her prominent lips on her otherwise pale, angular face. Her cold expression only sharpened her features, her dark blue eyes hard. “Who are you?”

Eron quickly pulled his hands back as if the woman had burned him. “I’m sorry,” he said again. “I’m a sky diver. I’m staying here until the baron goes to the mainland.”

The woman’s eyes narrowed just a bit, her lips curving into a small smile that did nothing to improve her harsh appearance. “Ah, yes, I did hear about that.” She held out one small, white hand. “Lady Lyla Forthwell.”

“Oh! You must be the baron’s daughter?” Eron said. She did not look much like her father except for the eyes.

Lyla let out a single derisive snort. “Of course,” she said in the same dismissive tone that the baron had used. He quickly took her hand and gave the back a polite kiss, noting that her nails were the same bright red as her lipstick.

“I am pleased to meet you, your ladyship.”

Lyla laughed, but it was not a warm sound. “Where are you headed so quickly, Mister…?”

“Marcel,” Eron said quickly. “Eron Marcel. I was actually looking for the side entrance where I came in earlier today.”

“Ah,” Lyla said. She gestured over his shoulder. “Back that way, take the second right.
